Grid-Scale Energy Storage for Renewable Integration, Peak Management and Power-System Flexibility
Utility-scale BESS can support renewable energy integration, scheduled energy delivery and grid services. Available functions depend on system design, equipment capabilities and grid requirements.
Conceptual grid-connected architecture. Actual equipment interfaces, protection, communications and control topology depend on the selected manufacturer and project design.
Our approach covers the complete storage architecture. A complete grid-connected energy-storage plant typically consists of several highly coordinated subsystems:
The electrochemical layer, using stationary lithium-based technology. Incorporates battery cells, modules, and modular racks with integrated electrical protection and thermal management within the container.
The Power Conversion System provides bidirectional conversion between DC battery power and the AC electrical network, managing grid-support functions and power quality.
The Battery Management System supervises cell voltage, temperature, state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH) and strict battery operating limits at the rack and system levels.
The Energy Management System controls when and how the BESS charges and discharges according to grid signals, renewable generation, electricity prices and the operating strategy.
BESS projects must be defined by both power and usable energy capacity. Correct BESS sizing requires detailed analysis rather than simply selecting a container.
Determines how much electrical power the system can charge or discharge at a given moment.
Determines how much energy the system can store and how long it can sustain a specified power output.

Utility-scale storage adds crucial flexibility to power networks and renewable energy projects. By deploying BESS, independent power producers and grid operators can address multiple operational challenges.
Combine solar PV and battery storage to provide more controllable and predictable renewable-energy delivery.
Transform Variable Solar Generation into Dispatchable Energy. Combining solar PV with battery energy storage can improve the controllability and value of renewable generation.
In an AC-coupled architecture, the solar PV system and BESS each have their own power-conversion equipment and connect through the AC electrical network.
This provides flexibility for independent sizing and operation, and is often highly suitable when battery storage is added to an existing solar plant.
In selected project architectures, solar generation and battery storage can share portions of the DC-side power-conversion system.
DC coupling may provide advantages for specific applications, including the capture of energy that might otherwise be lost to inverter clipping.
Modern utility-scale BESS technology is increasingly available in highly integrated configurations where battery storage and PCS functionality are combined within factory-engineered blocks.
Advantages include reduced field cabling, smaller footprint, simplified installation, and modular expansion.
PAYA Energy Nora coordinates the entire technology architecture: PV Modules, Inverters, Battery Storage, PCS, EMS, Transformers, and SCADA.
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) is widely used in modern stationary energy-storage applications. Utility-scale selection must consider much more than initial capacity.
PAYA evaluates factors including:
