Value Proposition

Four Reasons to Add Battery Storage

Solar Day & Night

Instead of exporting or wasting surplus daytime solar generation, excess energy charges the battery for evening use.

Backup Power

Keep essential loads like lighting, refrigeration, internet, and security systems running during grid interruptions.

Smart Energy

Automatically manage when energy should come from Solar PV, Battery, Grid, or an optional generator.

Reduced Grid Dependence

Significantly lower the amount of electricity that must be purchased from the conventional utility grid.

Operation

Solar Energy — Day and Night

A conventional solar system generates electricity primarily during daylight hours. With battery storage, surplus solar energy can be stored during the day and used later.

☀️ During the Day
Solar PV supplies household loads first. Surplus solar energy charges the battery.
🌙 In the Evening
Stored solar energy seamlessly supplies household consumption after the sun goes down.
⚡ During a Grid Outage
The hybrid inverter switches selected critical loads to battery-backed operation instantly.
🔋 Low Battery Energy
The system safely uses grid electricity or an optional generator to maintain power.

Example Residential Configurations

Essential Backup

For basic continuity
  • 3–5 kW Hybrid Inverter
  • 5–10 kWh Battery Storage
  • Solar PV Array
  • Critical-Load Panel

Suitable for essential household loads and short-to-medium backup requirements.

Family Home / Villa

The balanced standard
  • 5–8 kW Hybrid Inverter
  • 10–20 kWh Battery Storage
  • High-Efficiency Solar PV
  • Smart Monitoring & Backup

Suitable for homes with higher electricity consumption and longer backup requirements.

High-Energy Residence

For maximum independence
  • Three-Phase Hybrid Architecture
  • Multiple Battery Modules
  • Large Solar PV Array
  • Generator Integration & EMS

Final sizing must be based on actual load analysis for large properties.

How Much Battery Do You Need?

Battery capacity should not be selected simply by choosing the largest battery available. The correct capacity depends primarily on electrical load, required backup duration, and solar generation.

2 kW Critical Loads
×
5 Hours Desired Backup
=
10 kWh Delivered Energy Required

* The actual battery nominal capacity should be higher because system losses, battery operating limits (DOD) and reserve capacity must also be considered. Final system sizing requires detailed technical evaluation.

Critical Loads vs Whole-Home Backup

One of the most important residential design decisions is whether the BESS will support selected critical loads or the entire property.

Critical-Load Backup

Only priority circuits (lights, fridge, internet, security) are backed up. This normally reduces:

  • Required inverter power
  • Total battery capacity required
  • Initial system investment

Whole-Home Backup

A larger inverter and battery system is required to support most or all household loads. Particular attention must be given to high-power equipment:

  • Air conditioning & Heating
  • Electric ovens & Water heaters
  • Large pumps & EV chargers

PAYA Energy Nora recommends identifying critical loads before selecting the battery system.

Engineering Focus

System Capabilities & Safety

3–8 kW Hybrid Inverters

For typical residential applications, PAYA provides low-voltage hybrid inverter solutions across multiple power classes. The inverter acts as the central controller.

  • Fast backup switching (milliseconds)
  • On-grid and off-grid operation
  • Time-of-use scheduling
  • Generator compatibility
  • IP-rated outdoor protection

LFP Battery & BMS

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology provides long cycle life, stable chemistry, and safety. The BMS continuously supervises battery operation:

  • Cell voltage & Temperature monitoring
  • State of Charge (SOC) & Health (SOH)
  • Charging/Discharging protection
  • Communication with the hybrid inverter

Smart Monitoring

Residential energy monitoring provides real-time information through a mobile application or online platform:

  • Solar generation & Home consumption
  • Grid import / export
  • Battery SOC & Backup status
  • Historical energy data & Alarms

Solar + Battery + Generator

For locations with frequent or extended grid interruptions, an optional generator may be integrated. A properly configured energy strategy prioritizes Solar PV, then Battery, then Grid, and uses the Generator only as a last resort, reducing fuel use.

New Install or Retrofit

Residential storage can be considered for both new and existing solar installations.

  • New: PV, inverter, and battery are integrated.
  • Retrofit: Battery storage added through AC-coupled architecture (compatibility must be verified).

Safety & Installation

Installation location must comply with manufacturer requirements (temperature, ventilation, humidity). The system includes appropriate DC/AC protection, circuit breakers, surge protection, grounding, and emergency isolation.

Future Proofing

Intelligent System Expansion & EV Charging

A key advantage of modular battery architecture is the ability to expand storage capacity where supported by the selected battery system. Customers can plan for future changes such as higher consumption or additional air conditioning.

Residential energy systems can also be designed with future Electric Vehicle (EV) charging in mind, integrating Home Loads, BESS, Solar PV, Grid, and EV Charger into a single Smart Energy Management ecosystem.
