Understanding the Components of a
Battery Energy Storage System

BESS / PCS / BMS / EMS

A battery energy storage system combines batteries, power conversion, control, protection, thermal management and safety systems. These components work together to store and deliver energy within defined operating limits.

BESS

Battery Energy Storage System

The complete system for storing electrical energy and delivering it when required.

PCS

Power Conversion System

Converts power between the battery’s DC side and the AC system during charging and discharging.

BMS

Battery Management System

Monitors battery conditions and manages protection and operating limits.

EMS

Energy Management System

Coordinates charging and discharging according to site requirements, measurements and operating priorities.

System Fundamentals

Power Flow & Control Interfaces

The power-conversion path is separate from the monitoring and control functions. The exact equipment interfaces vary with the selected system architecture.

Beyond the Four Acronyms

Systems That Make BESS Work

The complete storage system also requires appropriately engineered protection, safety, thermal management and site interfaces.

01

Battery Assemblies

Cells, modules, racks and associated DC connections store electrical energy and operate within defined electrical and thermal limits.

Energy Storage
02

Power Conversion

A bidirectional PCS manages conversion between the battery DC system and the site’s AC electrical network during charging and discharging.

DC / AC
03

Battery Protection

The BMS monitors voltage, temperature and state of charge, identifies abnormal conditions and manages operating limits and battery-side protection interfaces.

BMS
04

Thermal Management

Heating, ventilation and/or cooling equipment is selected to maintain required battery and electronics operating temperatures for the chosen technology.

Thermal Control
05

Protection & Safety

Appropriate isolation, switching, electrical protection, fire detection and safety provisions are defined by system design, applicable rules and equipment documentation.

Safety Systems
06

Site Coordination

EMS, metering and optional supervisory interfaces coordinate storage with site demands and other energy assets according to project requirements.

System Selection

Information Needed to Select a System

System selection begins with actual project requirements. No product ratings, efficiencies, warranties or special operating functions are assumed before a manufacturer and model are confirmed.

Rated Power

Required charging and discharging power, stated in kW or MW.

Energy Capacity

Required usable energy storage, stated in kWh or MWh.

Discharge Duration

The intended duration of energy delivery at the specified power level.

Application

For example, renewable integration, load management or project-specific backup requirements.

Installation Site

Site location, indoor/outdoor constraints and relevant environmental conditions.

Grid Connection

Site electrical configuration, connection voltage, protection and utility requirements.

Backup supply, islanded operation, grid-forming capability and peak shaving are project- and equipment-dependent features. Their availability must be verified for the selected design.
