Business Value

What Can C&I BESS Do for Your Facility?

Peak Shaving

Battery storage can discharge during periods of high electrical demand, reducing the facility’s peak power drawn from the grid. The economic value depends on the applicable capacity tariff.

Solar Self-Consumption

When onsite solar generation exceeds instantaneous demand, excess energy is stored instead of exported. The stored energy can later be used when solar production declines.

Backup Power & Continuity

A properly engineered BESS can support critical loads during grid interruptions. It can be coordinated with UPS systems, critical-load panels, and existing electrical distribution.

Diesel Generator Reduction

At facilities relying on standby generators, battery storage prioritizes solar and stored energy, operating the generator only when necessary to reduce fuel, noise, and maintenance.

Load Shifting

Energy can be stored during selected operating periods (off-peak) and discharged at another time according to tariff, grid or operational requirements.

Ideal Applications

  • Manufacturing & Industrial estates
  • Warehouses & Cold-storage
  • Hotels & Shopping centers
  • Hospitals & Data facilities
  • Agricultural & Mining operations
Hardware Architecture

All-in-One C&I BESS Cabinets

Modern C&I storage solutions are increasingly available as factory-integrated outdoor cabinets. Depending on the selected technology, a cabinet integrates LFP Battery Modules, BMS, PCS, EMS, Thermal Management, and Fire Mitigation.

This integrated architecture reduces field integration requirements and provides a modular path for system expansion. Projects can use one or multiple cabinets, or larger containerized systems for multi-MWh requirements.

Start with the Required Capacity — Expand When Needed

C&I BESS should be sized according to the actual load profile rather than simply selecting the largest available battery.

kW vs kWh

Correct sizing requires understanding two different parameters:

kW — Power

Determines the maximum instantaneous charging or discharging power.

kWh — Energy

Determines how much electrical energy can be stored.

For example, a facility may require relatively high power for peak shaving but only short-duration storage. Another facility may require lower power but several hours of backup. The correct combination is determined from the site’s electrical profile.

Operational Value

Core BESS Strategies

Peak Shaving Strategy

Reduce the Highest Grid Demand

Many industrial sites experience short periods when electrical demand rises significantly above their normal operating level.

A BESS can detect this increase and discharge automatically to limit the power drawn from the grid. A properly configured EMS can define a maximum grid-import target.

When site demand exceeds this target, the BESS supplies the difference within its available power and SOC limits.

Battery Power (kW) is determined by the magnitude of the peak.

Battery Energy (kWh) is determined by how long the peak normally lasts.

Solar Self-Consumption

Use More of the Energy You Generate

Industrial facilities often have significant daytime electricity consumption, making them well suited to onsite solar generation. Adding battery storage extends the value of solar beyond daylight hours.

  • 1. Solar PV supplies facility loads directly whenever possible.
  • 2. Surplus solar generation is stored in the battery.
  • 3. Stored solar energy is used for evening or peak loads.
  • 4. Grid provides the remaining requirement via EMS coordination.
Intelligent Control

Smart Energy Management System

The EMS determines how the system creates value. It coordinates solar generation, facility demand, battery SOC, grid import/export, generator operation, and tariff schedules.

Depending on project requirements, operating strategies may be changed automatically throughout the day.

Morning
Solar generation increases and supports facility consumption.
Midday
Solar generation supplies the facility and surplus power charges the battery.
Afternoon Peak
The BESS discharges to limit grid demand and shave peak charges.
Evening
Stored solar energy can support facility loads after sunset.
Grid Outage
Where backup architecture is included, the BESS supports designated critical loads.
Low SOC
The EMS may start a generator or restore grid supply according to strategy.

LFP & Thermal Management

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) is widely used for commercial stationary storage. Evaluation considers usable energy, cycle life, DOD, charge/discharge rates, and degradation.

C&I systems use air cooling, HVAC, or liquid cooling. Correct thermal management ensures performance consistency, battery lifetime, and operational safety. Technology selection must account for local ambient conditions.

System Architectures

  • Grid-Connected: Energy optimization and peak management.
  • Backup BESS: Support selected critical loads during grid interruption.
  • Hybrid BESS + Generator: Coordinates batteries and generators.
  • Microgrid: Coordinates PV, BESS, grid, generators and loads centrally.
  • Retrofit: AC-coupled BESS added to existing solar plants.

Safety Architecture

Battery safety must be designed at the system level. Protection may include:

  • Cell & Module monitoring
  • Rack-level BMS & Isolation monitoring
  • Overcurrent protection & Temperature sensing
  • Smoke & Gas detection
  • Thermal management & Emergency shutdown
  • Fire mitigation or suppression systems
  • SCADA / EMS remote monitoring & Alarms

Monitoring & Data

Modern C&I BESS provides clear visibility over PV generation, facility consumption, Grid import/export, Battery SOC/Power/Temp, PCS status, Peak demand, and Alarm history.

Engineering Process

How PAYA Sizes a C&I BESS

Correct sizing begins with data. We evaluate 12 months of bills, 15-minute load data, maximum demand, transformer capacity, operating hours, critical loads, and existing/planned solar capacity.

Three Questions Determine the First BESS Size

  1. What is your maximum power demand? (kW or MW)
  2. How long must the battery operate? (Minutes or hours)
  3. What problem must the battery solve? (Peak Shaving, Solar Storage, Backup, Generator Reduction, Microgrid)

Economic Evaluation

The value of a C&I BESS should be determined from multiple potential benefits (Peak reduction, Energy shifting, Avoided production losses, Generator fuel reduction) rather than battery price alone.

A financial model considers CAPEX, OPEX, degradation, round-trip losses, electricity/fuel price, and project lifetime.
